The BASA Long Course National Swimming Championship started yesterday, March 6th and will continue until Sunday, March 11th.
The highlight of swimming on day 1 was the lone record established by Hannah Gill of Pirates Swim Club. The lone entrant from the 11-12 age group in this event Hannah lowered the age group record established by Zabrina Holder in 2009 to 9:49.12.
The 800 Metres event besides Gill attracted 5 other swimmers. Sariyah Sherry, Kimberley Willoughby and Amara Gibbs all swam under the Carifta qualifying time in their respective age groups. Christian Selby of the boys 13-14 followed suit and posted a personal best in the 1500 M freestyle while cementing his time standard. Accredited as a FINA OLYMPIC QUALIFIER for London 2012 swimmers from the surrounding Islands will be joining the local swimmers on Thursday: St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Antigua & Barbuda and Grenada. Not all will have an Olympic focus though as the majority are seeking to meet their Countries’ standards for the Carifta Swimming Championships scheduled to be held in THE BAHAMAS from April 12th –15th 2012. Many of the local first timers are anticipating a good meet as each one of them is making it his/her business to meet a standard to secure a place at this much acclaimed meet-CARIFTA. The dual in the pool will be grueling, the competition will be at its best.
