The POWERADE BARBADOS 5K OPEN WATER INTERNATIONAL got off to a good start on Monday, June 13th with 21 stalwarts in the discipline. The start was from the famous Accra beach and began at 9:00 AM traversing a course which took them along the south coast past Coconut Court Hotel, the Drill Hall Beach, around by the Hilton, through the calm waters of Carlisle Bay, pass the Boat Yard and finishing on Browne’s beach. Swimmers ranged in ages from 11 to 57 and all participants successfully completed the course. On this occasion the male contingent outnumbered the female component of contestants 14 to 8. The Barbados Amateur Swimming Association is firm in its resolve to develop this event using the vast expanse of Barbados’ natural resource: an abundance of calm sea water. The sea swim which took approximately 1hr 52 mins 14 seconds was won by 15 year old male swimmer GABRIEL GUNBY in 1hr,10 minutes, 21 seconds. First placed female was CARIFTA swimmer REBECCA CLARKE who completed the course 5 minutes later in 1 hr, 15 minutes, 14 seconds.
Second placed male was RUSSELL OLIVER in 1 hr, 10 minutes, 51 seconds, with the BASA Treasurer ANDREW KIRBY finishing 3rd in 1 hr, 14 minutes, 30 seconds. TRISTAN WARD, who represented Barbados at last year’s CISC event in CUBA was placed 4th in 1hr 14 minutes, 38 seconds, just 8 seconds behind the 3rd placed finisher KIRBY. 5TH spot went to JONATHAN PILE finishing in 1 hr, 15 minutes , 2 seconds. The line up of finishes for the ladies was as follows: second placed female CARIFTA medalist 13 year old KIMBERLEY WILLOUGHBY was close behind Rebecca in 1 hr, 15 minutes, 20 seconds, 3rd placed finisher was top Carifta Swimmer -ZABRINA HOLDER in 1 hr, 18 minutes, 20 seconds followed by 4th place finisher & Carifta swimmer & backstroke veteran-AMARA GIBBS to end with another veteran backstroker LEE-ANN ROSE in 5th position clocked 1hr 18 minutes, 33 seconds.
The youngest participant was 11 year old NICHOLAS HALL who finished in 1 hr, 21 minutes, 28 seconds and the oldest JOHN MIKE PETERKIN finishing in 1 hr 27 minutes , 53 seconds. Other participants were Rene Dulieu, Silvia Loustric, Veteran Lake Ontario Conquerer-PETER GIBBS, Allison Pile, Master’s swimmer Jonathan Morgan, Barbados’ former top swimmer Cliff Gittens, Water polo stalwart-Stanley Brooker, Zandel Holder and Akeem Nurse. BASA is set to continue this event with the hope of attracting a group of open water enthusiasts to represent Barbados in world events in the next 3 to 5 years. The BASA was abundant in its thanks and appreciation to the safety boat crew under the command of Mr Andrew Clarke, the timers, recorders and of course the participants for making it a wonderful event.
