BRADLEY ALLY & CHRISTIAN SELBY-TOP ACHIEVERS FOR THE YEAR 2010

The Barbados Amateur Swimming Association celebrated the achievements of its swimmers for the year 2010 at its annual gala held this year at the Barbados Beach Club. Before a packed audience made up of a wide cross section of the swimming fraternity and invited guests the evening’s proceedings unfolded and the top achievers were revealed.

The newly elected President of CCCAN, Mr Errol Clarke and Mr Christopher Simmons Sales Manager of Purity Bakeries, sponsor of the primary Schools’ interschool Swimming Championships were on hand to celebrate with the swimmers. The Barbados Olympic Association’s Secretary General, Mr Erskine Simmons, also the Deputy Chairman of the National Sports Council, in his brief remarks stated that the Aquatic Centre model should be adopted by other national federations and should be fully supported by the Government. He stated that swimming was the only sport to have won gold medals at the Central American & Caribbean Games in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico and pledged the full support of his Association in preparing for the Pan-American Games and the London 2012 Olympics.

Mr Christopher Simmons in making his remarks urged Barbadians to make healthy choices to avoid obesity. He also stated that Purity Bakeries had continued its partnership with the Swimming Association as BASA gave of its very best ‘to create a professional environment for the Primary Schools’ Competition while seeking to create a culture and a desire within young people to participate in a sport which can be a lifetime means to fitness and weight control’.

The President of the Swimming Association, Mrs Sonia O’Neal lauded the achievements of the swimmers and dubbed the year 2010 as another year for record performance. She informed that 162 new national & meet marks had been established overall and that the swimmers took the sport to new heights through their achievements.

The audience was serenaded by renditions by Ms Hannah Gill and Ms Paulette Sobers and was treated to a sumptuous dinner prepared by the Hotel’s staff.

Both Junior and senior swimmers were recipients of the awards and kudos was paid to MR JASON CUMMINS for his outstanding leadership as Team Captain of the Goodwill Swim team.
